The Chariot: Card Description

The card of the chariot shows us the figure of a man, a charioteer who drives a chariot drawn by sphinxes. He is found under a cloak like a six-pointed canopy, and decorated with multiple six-pointed stars , which represent the celestial influences in the work done by this card.

The half moons on the shoulders of the man are exterior to refer to the formative world.  The symbols on the robe are alchemical symbols, representing the spiritual transformation of man.

The square represents the earth, a sign of willpower. The laurel and star in the crown indicate man’s highest achievement in spiritual evolution.

The wings on the front of the float represent inspiration and the Hindu sign the union of positive and negative. Sphinxes in black and white have the same meaning, positive and negative, yin and yang.

The Charioteer has no reins, only the magician’s wand to drive the chariot, which is controlled through willpower in the same way that the magician does.

The city is behind him, indicating that he has turned his back on civilization and materialism in order to seek spiritual answers.

The Chariot (Reversed) – General meaning

The inverted Chariot represents lack of control and direction, aggression, uncertainty.

You are possibly in an aggressive stage, with anger and pain, but you must stop blaming anyone, not even yourself. What you must do is put your best will and know that you cannot control all the events that happen in an existence.
